Attractor

Screenshot 2018-08-15 at 10.42.34 AMReal Name: Andrew Black

Known Relatives: Gabrielle (sister, aka Repulsor), Sebastian (father, deceased), Annabelle (mother, deceased)

Team Affiliation: The Confederation; (formerly) the Off-Worlders & the Outcast Squadron

Powers and Abilities: Black has the ability to tap into electromagnetic force, one of the four fundamental interactions of nature. He can create both electric and magnetic fields, discharge bolts of extreme power using both fields, and create powerful screens of protection. He can use electromagnetic force to govern the process of chemistry, which arises from interactions between the electrons of neighboring atoms. He can create magnetic poles that attract or repel metallic objects. He can use electromagnetic forces to carry momentum by their movement, enabling him to fly and even bring others to fly alongside him.

Because human beings have iron performing their vital physiological functions, Black has the ability to produce iron deficiency, which can leave people physically tired and weak. He can impair mental function and weaken immune systems, and quite oppositely he can poison organs and even cause hemorrhaging.

In addition to his powers, Andrew Black has a photographic memory and photographic reflexes, and over a short time has mastered numerous kinds of martial arts and fighting styles, which he often mixes and matches into new styles of his very own. Because of this, it makes him extremely hard to harm, or even kill, as he has been trained extensively to almost anticipate an opponent’s style.

Black is immune to any form of mental domination, including brainwashing, possession, and other forms of telepathic attack. Unless he chooses to allow it to happen, he is also resistant to all sorts of telepathy.

Black is immune to all forms of poison, radiation, and disease, including aging, thus making him immortal.

All of this was caused by numerous genetic experiments performed upon him while he was a fetus within his mother’s womb by his father, Sebastian, who sought to improve the human condition as best as possible.

Vulnerability: Despite how powerful Andrew Black is, he is still vulnerable in one area: Emotionally. The deaths of his father and mother have scarred him forever, along with the demise of several other specific people. His fear of losing someone he loves drives him to avoid letting people get close to him. And if he does allow someone in, he may become obsessed with protecting them. Of further burden is his immortality, as he is acutely aware that anyone he knows or cares about will eventually die, whether to old age or disease or other factors of which he has no way to combat. He is also troubled by his inability to be able to save everyone, and is tormented with the realization that there is nothing he can do about accidents.

First Appearance: Sunblast #1

History: Andrew Black is the son of Sebastian and Annabelle Black. Sebastian Black is a master of genetic engineering, gene splicing, and DNA manipulation, always on the hunt to evolve the human condition so people could live longer, avoid disease, and improve themselves. Sebastian helped found Abattoir, a covert organization who shared his works. However, as time progressed, it became apparent that the other members of Abattoir harbored more selfish, even sinister motives that he did not agree with. He took his two months pregnant wife with him and abandoned Abattoir, taking up residence on a private island whose location was unknown to everyone but the Blacks. Once there, Sebastian began his work anew, using the fetus of his unborn child. He tinkered and toiled, testing and experimenting with great determination yet also great compassion and care, for he loved his child and only wished to make him better. Annabelle shared his view and welcomed his tests. Unbeknownst to them at the time, early on, there was another child in Annabelle’s womb, a female twin to his male offspring. Upon discovery of this, Sebastian noticed his experiments had unintentionally affected his second child, opening up a new avenue of inspection for him.

Eventually, the children were born. The parents named them Andrew and Gabrielle, who both seemed normal despite the extensive testing done upon them before their birth. Only time would tell what his actions would wrought.

However, ten years later, another member of Abattoir, Damon Corseau, eventually tracked them down. He had developed an obsession with Sebastian Black’s work and an even unhealthier one in Sebastian’s wife, Annabelle, who had spurned him several times too many. He demanded Sebastian work for him under his subversive directives, but he also demanded the children be handed over to him for further examination and experimentation, to eventually be used as weapons.

Sebastian Black refused, as Corseau expected. Activating a bomb he had planted in the house before confrontation, Corseau murdered Annabelle Black, who was incinerated by a jet of flame blasting its way out of Sebastian’s house. Sebastian fought back, but was beaten down by Corseau and his men, after which Corseau shot Sebastian Black in the head numerous times until his clip was empty.

Andrew Black was horrified, having witnessed the brutal carnage. They were sights he would never forget, thanks to his photographic memory. He had no idea what happened to his sister, Gabrielle, however, for she was playing somewhere on the other side of the house. Corseau and his men took Andrew kicking and screaming away from the scene, pulling him into their van, leaving behind devastation in their wake.

For the next five years, Corseau tortured and brainwashed Andrew Black. It took them that long to complete their task due to Black’s combative photographic memory. But when it was over, Corseau had successfully turned the then 15-year-old Andrew Black into the perfect assassin, having him trained to fight and to shoot. However, the one thing that eluded Corseau was Andrew Black’s inherent electromagnetic abilities, which remained dormant and inaccessible despite the poking and prodding Corseau’s scientists performed upon the teenager.

The following three years bore fruit to Corseau’s plans. He had Black eliminate enemies, kill rivals, and perform work only Black himself could perform. That is, until Corseau’s daughter, Victoria, entered the picture. Victoria became fascinated the moment she first saw Andrew Black. She saw how increasingly tormented he seemed to be, as Corseau’s brainwashing slowly began to unravel. In addition, Victoria herself hated her father, who hated her in return, blaming his daughter for the death of his wife, Estelle, during childbirth. He had also wanted a son, an heir to his empire, not some useless girl. Still, she was of his blood, so he kept her around, even just to make her life a living hell as she grew up.

One evening, as a storm brewed, Andrew and Victoria finally gave into the passion they harbored for one another. In the aftermath, Victoria was dead, having been strangled to death by Andrew at the height of their coupling. He was horrified. As he backed away frantically, Andrew Black recalled a scene several nights earlier when Corseau had forcibly detained him and used his brainwashing technique to implant a suggestion to murder his daughter should they ever become sexually intimate. At this point, Corseau had actually grew to hate Andrew Black, the son of the woman he had obsessed over all those years ago that spurned him every chance she got. What a perfect way to satiate his hatred of him and the intense disgust he held for his own daughter.

Within seconds, Andrew Black’s conditioning shattered, overwhelming him with his every memory of torment at Corseau’s hands, starting with the death of his parents. He bolted from Corseau’s estate, located somewhere in the South China Sea, and became lost in the violence or the roaring storm that had been unleashed by mother nature. He made his way to a cliff next to a beach where he and Victoria often frolicked and dropped to his knees, screaming in horror as his memory seemed to collapse in upon itself, drowning with terrible memories of death and murder. Unable to endure it any longer, Andrew Black threw himself off the cliff to his death.

Three days later, Andrew Black awoke in a richly decorated bedroom, somehow alive, unable to remember the past three days in any way, despite his photographic memory. Two men were sitting on the floor near the bed, meditating. Both were Chinese, named Tsau and Tsu. When they sensed Andrew was awake, they greeted him and explained the situation: They had found Andrew in the sea, near death but somehow still alive, and have been nursing him to health ever since. It wouldn’t be until much later when the three of them discovered just how Andrew survived the entire ordeal: His innate electromagnetic power had created a sheath around his body, protecting him from drowning and the elements of nature.

In the six months that followed, Andrew spent it all lying in a deprivation tank, immersed within special fluids that not only enhanced his very body but helped repair his mind. The fluids drew forth his body’s genetically given immunities and strengthened them to an extreme degree. Master Tsau and Master Tsu (as he came to refer to them) also used subliminal techniques that would forever prevent any further corruption of Andrew Black’s mind. Once the six months was over, Master Tsau and Master Tsu trained Andrew to fight, using techniques that surpassed the ones Corseau’s people had used. Except this, the Chinese masters taught him not to kill, but to defend. To protect. To save. Instilling within him a sense of honor, fearlessness, and courage. They taught him not to seek redemption for his past heinous actions but to ensure that innocent people not experience similar experiences. From this moment forth, every person he saved would be someone else’s father, son, mother, or daughter that they would subsequently be able to continue to enjoy, and love, and be with for the remainder of their lives.

Master Tsau and Master Tsu passed on two years later, leaving Andrew Black with seemingly unlimited wealth, monetary and otherwise, including a vast library of knowledge. He then went out into the world to begin his work, determined to honor his masters and his newfound outlook. But there was one thing he needed to do first:

He needed to discover if his twin sister Gabrielle was still alive.
